Authorities name female motorcyclist injured in Muskegon crash

MUSKEGON, MI— Authorities have identified the Muskegon woman injured in a Saturday afternoon motorcycle crash as 53-year-old Norma Scheele. Police said early Monday that Scheele, a Muskegon Public Schools employee, had not been wearing a helmet when she sustained serious injuries after colliding with a minivan that failed to stop at a stop sign at Wood Street and Orchard Avenue around 1 p.m. on Saturday. The investigation remained open Monday, but the driver of the van will likely receive a citation once the case is closed, police said. A Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus official said early Monday that Scheele has since been discharged from the Muskegon hospital. Police said they haven’t been contacted by hospital officials about her condition which means she likely improved since the crash. Initially, witnesses as the scene said Scheele had been seriously injured. Due to privacy laws, hospital and police officials can't divulge what type of injuries Scheele sustained. The driver of the minvan, James Monroe, 70, from Muskegon Heights, told witnesses at the scene that he mistakenly ran the stop sign. Authorities declined to name Monroe as the driver of the van because the investigation into the crash continued Monday morning.
