Motorcyclist loses lower leg in Emmett Township crash
EMMETT TOWNSHIP, MI -- Public safety officers in search formation combed a swamp and located the severed leg of an injured motorcyclist in time for the leg to accompany the rider on a helicopter flight to a Kalamazoo hospital shortly before noon Friday. Platoon Commander Clarke Lawson of the Emmett Township Department of Public Safety said the motorcyclist and a companion were riding on separate cycles southbound on Raymond Road near the curve of Golden Avenue when, at about 11:30 a.m., one of the cycles collided with a car, eastbound on Golden Avenue curving onto Raymond Road. The woman driving the car called 911 to report the crash; neither she nor her passenger were injured, Lawson said, but they told officers they could not see either motorcycle at the scene. The injured man was located by emergency responders about 60 feet off the road in a swampy area, and his Hyosung motorcycle was found nearby. The man's right leg, severed below the knee, was not immediately found, so a search party of 15-20 officers was formed to comb the weeds as the rider was prepared for transport via helicopter ambulance, Lawson said. The injured man's leg was found about 100 feet farther east of the man and bike, Lawson said. Authorities determined that the second motorcyclist had ridden away. As of 1:25 p.m., he had not been found, Lawson said. The injured man, whose age and address were not immediately known, suffered many serious injuries, Lawson said, but he was conscious and talking to rescue workers, he said. He was wearing his helmet, police said.
